NMHEF was established during a central gathering of Micro-Hydro entrepreneurs in 2003 with the mission of addressing issues and concerns of Micro-Hydro entrepreneurs for the development and expansion of the Micro-Hydro sector in Nepal. The Federation currently represents 503 Micro-Hydro Entrepreneurs from 16 Districts Associations.
An estimated total of 1474 Micro-Hydro Plants have been installed in 57 districts of Nepal providing electricity to approximately 200,000 households. Though the Micro-Hydro sector has made commendable progress in providing electricity to rural areas, its growth is limited by the lack of skilled manpower in rural areas, lengthy bureaucratic procedures and complex credit system.
