NNC-IUCN was formed by the IUCN member organizations on 9 May 2000, and constituted with effect from 22 June 2000 in accordance with the IUCN statues. NNC-IUCN was duly registered as an independent non-government body with the Chief District Office of His Majesty's Government in Lalitpur, Nepal on 20 March 2003.
The formation of the NNC-IUCN was in line with the spirit of recommendations made at the General Assembly of IUCN-The World Conservation Union at Buenos Aires, Argentina that the IUCN become a "member driven" rather than a "bureau driven" organization, with full participation of its members worldwide.
The NNC-IUCN conforms to the revised statues adopted at IUCN World Conservation Congress, Montreal, Canada in 1996. The National and Regional Committees will be activated as a main driving force of the Union.
The NNC-IUCN is made up of 13 members representing His Majesty's Government, International body and the national organizations. Nepal joined the Union in 1968 and became one of the first Asian countries to become a member.
